In-Depth Information
Here's the general scheme. Year round, every day except in bad weather, there are two
daily sailings for Kumejima and one for Tonakijima. There is some extra service in the
summer months. Every morning at 8:30 AM the Kume Line ferry (passengers, vehicles and
cargo) departs Naha heading west. Thirty-six miles (58 kilometers) later, or two hours and
15 minutes, at 10:45 AM , the ferry arrives at the small island of Tonakijima. Unloading and
reloading passengers and freight takes 15 minutes. At 11:00 AM the ferry departs and sails an-
other hour and a half for 30 miles (48 kilometers) to Kumejima, arriving at 12:30 PM . There it
docks for an hour and a half.
At 2:00 PM the Kume Ferry departs and sails 60 miles (96 kilometers) directly back to
Naha, not stopping at Tonaki along the way. It arrives at Tomari Port three hours and 15
minutes later, at 5:15 PM , where it moors for the night. The next day, and every day, the ferry
repeats this schedule.

Meanwhile, at 2:00 PM another Kume-bound ferry departs Naha and sails directly there,
arriving non-stop at 5:15 PM . It'll dock and stay overnight at Kume. The next morning, at
8:30 AM , this ferry will depart Kume and sail two hours to Tonaki, arriving at 10:00 AM . Fif-
teen minutes later, at 10:15 AM , it'll depart and sail the two and a quarter hours bringing it
home to Tomari Port at 12:30 PM . It'll leave again at 2:00 PM on its afternoon direct run to
Kume, thus starting the cycle all over again.
