In-Depth Information
Senagajima is a popular recreation island noted for its baseball diamonds, white sand beach and, at low
tide, shoreline reefs.
To leave Senagajima we'll cross back over the causeway to Okinawa mainland. From here
we'll travel north just under 4 miles (6 kilometers), passing the airport along the way, then
come to downtown Naha. At its beginning we'll pass by the first of Naha's three ports, ap-
propriately called Naha Port ( 那覇港 ; Naha-kō). It's a commercial shipping port, a Naval port
(US and Japan) and the ferry port for the “A” and Marix Lines to the Amami Islands and Ka-
goshima.
About 1.75 miles (3 kilometers) further north we'll come to Tomari Port ( 泊港 ; Tomari-
kō). That's where we'll stop for the moment as it's the terminus for ferries to the Keramas and
many other of the Okinawan East China Sea islands. If we were to continue from here north-
bound on the road through Naha, in about 1 mile (1.5 kilometers) we would come to Naha's
third port, called New Port ( 那覇新港 ; Naha Shin-kō), which many still call Aja Port ( 安謝港 ;
Ajakō). It's the terminus for the long-distance ferries north to Tokyo, Osaka and other main-
land cities.
Naha Airport take-offs and landings.
FERRIES TO TONAKI AND KUME
We'll start at Tomari Port and board one of the morning ferries outbound to some of the oth-
er islands off Okinawa's west coast. There are many in addition to the Kerama Islands. One
of the most popular, and lovely, is Kume. Let's go there next.
