In-Depth Information
Agenashikushima, with Zamami Port in the background, has a collection of half a dozen rocks to its south-
east.
GAHIJIMA ( 嘉比島 ; Gahi-jima). Continue due west about 2,130 feet (650 meters) from
Agenashiku and one arrives at Gahi. The islet is poised almost exactly between Zamami's
southwesternmost cape of Shirugusuku ( 白城の崎 ; Shiru-gusuku no zaki; lit. “White Castle
Cape”) and Aka's northernmost point, Cape Kurozaki ( 黒崎 ; Kuro zaki; lit. “Black Cape”).
Alternatively, measured from the dock at Zamami Port, it is just over 1 mile (1.5 kilometers)
to the southwest.
Gahijima, as seen from the Kami-no hama tenbōdai (“God's Beach Lookout”) on Cape Shirugusuku,
Zamami Island.
Gahi is actually a little collection of one larger central islet and three smaller ones, all
connected by sand. Its overall dimensions are approximately 985 by 1,800 feet (300 by 550
meters), with the primary central rock measuring around 740 by 985 (225 by 300 meters).
The three other islets measure anywhere from 245 to 495 feet (75 to 150 meters) in diamet-
er. All are green, covered by thick, dense subtropical vegetation. The westernmost islet has a
trail leading up to a small knoll where you'll find the lighthouse. The overall circumference
of Gahi, including the sand, is about 2 miles (1.5 kilometers) and it has an area of one-tenth
of a square kilometer. Its highest point is 165 feet (50 meters) above sea level.
