Tokashikijima has approximately 725 residents scattered in several villages. The two
largest are Tokashiki Port ( 渡嘉敷港 ; Tokashi-ki-kō), where the ferries dock, and Aharen (
波連 ; Aharen), which is on the other side (west side) of the island and has the largest and best
beach. There are several hostels and minshuku inns in Tokashiki, 20 or so in Aharen and one
in the little village of Tokashiku ( 渡嘉志久 ; Tokashi-ku). Most tourist facilities are in Aharen.
Everyone caters to the dive trade and all the minshuku are hooked up with local dive shops, of
which there are many. There are several quite large Japanese Youth Camps on the island, one
in the north and one in Tokashiku, but these will not be of interest to most Western visitors.
