west after the Kamiyama reef and the same distance northwest from the Kuefu sandbar. Nat-
urally, it's also potentially dangerous and large ships give it a wide berth.
Nagannujima is about three-quarters of a mile (1 kilometer) long from east to west and
about 500-650 feet (150-200 meters) wide. It's never much higher than about 15 feet (5
meters). Several sections are covered in permanent scrub vegetation. Interestingly, this mini-
islet is set up for day-trippers from Naha's local luxury hotels. There are freshwater showers,
cabanas and chaise-longues available. Would-be Robinson Crusoes pack a lunch and refresh-
ments and come out here for peace, quiet and clean water swimming, something they can't
find in Naha's Harbor. There's a pier on the island's southern side where light craft can tie up.
The size of the Kuefujima sandbar (front) and Kamiyama islet (rear) depends on the height of the tide.
Several areas of Nagannujima, another hazardous shoal, have permanent vegetation. The islet is a popular
destination for day-trippers.
Maejima, the first real” island in the Kerama mini-archipelago, is actually three islets strung in a
north-south row.
