In-Depth Information
Adjijima is one of the most prosperous and developed islands, with modern infrastructure facilities arrayed
arounds its shoreline.
The popular island of Ōjima is reached by a bridge (center right) from the mainland.
19 ĀDJIJIMA アージ島
From Adochi or Tamata we return to shore and walk south along the beach almost exactly
three-quarters of a mile (1 kilometer) to our next islet, Ādjijima ( アージ島 ; Ādjijima). This
must be one of the most unusual tiny islands, perhaps the tiniest, in all the Okinawa-shotō,
for it is privately held. It is someone's residence. Its causeway is short, only about 165 feet (50
meters), but it includes a small bridge allowing the tidal waters to pass underneath. At low
tide it's reachable over a sandbar but at high tide it's completely surrounded by water and then
the causeway is the only land link. As small and as close to shore as it may be, it nevertheless
is an island. At the end of the causeway/bridge, there's a gate, and it's locked. What appears
to be a helipad is directly in front of it. At the top of the gate it says アーヂ島 , an alternative
spelling for Adjijima.
