During World War II and in the years immediately following, the bay was called “Buck-
ner Bay” by Americans in honor of General Simon Bolivar Buckner Jr, who was killed not
that far from the southern end of the bay in central south Okinawa (page 145 ). here's a me-
morial plaque to him at the location of his death (page 92 ) .
