In-Depth Information
13 GONJIYANIWA ゴンジヤン岩
Approximately 2,620 feet (800 meters) due east of Aginami-iwa and around 2,625 feet (625
meters) southeast of the White Beach facility's white beach, is one more large rock, Gonijiy-
aniwa ( ゴンジヤン岩 ; Gonjiyaniwa). It's about 230 feet (70 meters) across from east to west
and perhaps 130 feet (40 meters) wide from north to south. It's almost devoid of vegetation.
Along with Kudaka, Tsuken is one of the two “big” islands in Nakagusuku Bay. Tsuken's little sister islet,
tiny Afuiwa, is just to the left at top.
14 TSUKENJIMA 津堅島
At its very closest to mainland Okinawa, Tsukenjima ( 津堅島 ; Tsuken-jima) is a little more
than 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from its northern end to the beach at White Beach Naval Sta-
tion. But from Heshikiya Port ( 平敷 屋港 ; Heshikiya-kō) to Tsuken Port ( 津堅港 ; Tsuken-kō)
it's a tad further, about 5 miles (8 kilometers). In either case, you get the picture, it's not far.
Depending on the time of year, there are five or six ferries a day out of Heshikiya Port that
make the round trip. The fast passenger express ferry takes about 10 minutes one way. The
slower ferry runs several times a day and takes about 25 minutes, but it carries vehicles. That's
worth remembering if you plan on bringing your bike, car or motorcycle.
