Colloquially known as Yanbaru, the northern section of Okinawa Main Island ( 沖縄 本島北部 ;
Okinawa-hontō Hokubu) is, with the exception of the Churaumi Aquarium, easily the least-
known part of the island. Even to Okinawans in Naha, and perhaps even to some in Nago (
護市 ; Nago-shi), much of the north is isolated, remote and wild. A large percentage of it is
uninhabited. We're roughly talking about the section of the island from Nago to Cape Hedo
( 辺戸岬 ; Hédo-misaki) and we'll include the relatively large western extension of the Motobu
Peninsula ( 本部半島 ; Motobu-hantō).
