see. It's a good place to get acquainted with reef life in Okinawa without any diving lessons at
all.
Going up the coast a bit further, there are only a few smaller hotels, such as the Kise Beach
Palace and the Okinawa Suncoast in Koki. After here, you pass through the villages of Kyoda,
Sukuta and Yofuke, but there are no more hotels or resorts. The final stretch of coast until you
reach Nago, perhaps the last 3 miles (5 kilometers), is almost all rocky and, besides, it's just
too far from Naha and the airport for most tourists to come.

We'll pause here, for this is our boundary from central Okinawa to north Okinawa. We
started just above Naha, more or less at a line we drew across the island from the east coast
town of Nishihara across to the west coast town of Urasoe, with the American Consulate at
the center. Now we'll draw a line from just below Nago on the East China Sea side, east across
the island to a particularly narrow point, the inside rim of Oura Bay ( 大浦湾 ; Ōura-wan).
This line is only 3.75 miles (6 kilometers) wide but the island will get much wider very soon
as we head north. As the crow flies, from the US Consulate to any point along this central-
northern dividing line, it's 27 miles (43 kilometers), but by road it's anywhere from 35 to 40
miles (56 to 64 kilometers). There are several routes. One runs along the east coast, one along
