In-Depth Information
of interest here: the Okinawa-Zanpamisaki Royal Hotel, Zanpa Beach and a lighthouse at the
tip of the cape, all three visible in the aerial photo above right.
The Zanpamisaki Royal is a 475-room luxury hotel with an 18-hole golf course. It has a
large outdoor pool as well as hot soaking bath and spa facilities. It's popular with Japanese
tour groups who come in on weekly packages and therefore get the benefit of competitive
group rates. If you check in on your own, rooms start at $200-$250 a night for a standard
twin. That's rather typical of most all the luxury hotels on this side of the island. The Zan-
pamisaki Royal is the first of a long string of top hotels that, starting here, run all the way
up the western shoreline until just before Nago. The Onna Coast, as it is known, is the prime
beach and resort area of Okinawa. We'll mention a number of these hotels as we pass them
by further below, but the Zanpamisaki Royal can be said to be the beginning.

The second attraction on the cape are the twin side-by-side white sand beaches called
Zanpa Beach ( 残波浜 ; Zanpa-hama). It's one of the few beaches on Okinawa where you don't
need water booties. In other words, on these beaches white sand means white sand, not sand
with rocks and broken shards of coral, which unfortunately is the norm on many beaches on
Okinawa. Zanpa Beach's really soft white sand is thus popular with couples with kids.
The third attraction is the picturesque Zanpa Lighthouse ( 残波岬灯台 ; Zanpamisaki
tōudai). Of course, it's just a lighthouse, but it's a scenic one, high as it is standing on the
Zanpa cliffs right at the end of a narrow, windswept point. For 150 Yen you can exercise your
leg muscles and knee joints and climb to the top. Up there it's exactly what you would expect,
a great view.
