In-Depth Information
All year long, every week, hundreds of would-be Japanese Jacques Cousteaus fly down
from Tokyo and other cold points north to dive the Sunabe Seawall. The area is chock a block
full of dive shops with rental gear, qualified instruction and professional guides. Anybody
with a couple of days and a couple of hundred dollars (in Yen) can dive. The seawall's un-
dersea coral reef is like swimming in a tropical aquarium. Crystal-clear warm waters full
of brightly colored exotic fish—it's gorgeous. Naturally, anyone of any age can dive, but as
a practical matter many of the enthusiasts are young people, so the neighborhood is full of
minshuku inns and small hotels to serve their needs. And après-dive? How about a cold Ori-
on? There are plenty of local bars, not high priced, and that's another reason why it's a fun
district.
