Lacquer Buddha at the Peace Park
Inspired by the death of his two sons who were killed in the Batle of Okinawa, local arist Shinzan
Yamada (1885-1977) created this statue over an 18-year period. It is the world's largest lacquer rep-
resentaion of Buddha.
Peace Memorial Park
Regardless of their naionality, the over 240,000 persons killed in the Batle of Okinawa are re-
membered here, their names engraved on black granite slabs. Southern Okinawa also houses the
Peace Art Museum; “Heiwa Kinendo,” a giant statue of Buddha, the Japanese Underground Naval
Headquarters and “Himeyuri-no-To,” the site where more than 200 schoolgirls and their teachers
chose to die, rather than face (what they were told) certain rape and slaughter at the hands of the
American “barbarians.”
