The Southern part of Okinawa Main Island (
沖縄本島南部
; Okinawa-hontō Nanbu) can be
defined as that part of the island which begins near the very bottom of the island, at Cape Ky-
an, and runs up north to a little past Naha, say to around Ginowan (
宜野湾市
; Ginowan-shi)
and Urasoe (
浦添市
; Urasoéshi). This portion is about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from north to
south and anywhere from 6 to around 9 miles (10 to around 15 kilometers) from east to west.
Although it does not occupy an equal one-third of the island's land area, and has more than
three-quarters of the island's people living here, it's Okinawa's most densely populated section
