This wasn't my first hallucination.
During an expedition across the Greenland ice sheet I had
at times been struck by the distinct impression that I was
skiing through a valley of long grass waving hypnotically in
the breeze. Before that, while sleep-deprived at the end of an
intense fortnight of skiing across the Canadian Arctic, I had
heard my name called distinctly and repeatedly over the rush
of the wind. When I turned to my team-mates skiing in line
behind me, it was clear that neither of them had spoken. Later
