Summary
Questions for Thought
Competition is central to understanding many aspects of aquatic com-
munities and, thus, has been the focus of much research. Other ways that
species interact (including indirect interactions, succession, mutualism, and
the effects of keystone species) also have consequences in determining com-
munity structure. Some of these concepts were discussed in previous chapters
including basic definitions of types of interactions (Chapter 7), classification
of interaction types (e.g., trait-mediated versus density-mediated interactions;
Chapter 18), and interactions involving microorganisms (Chapter 18). This
chapter focuses on interactions among larger organisms.
