Examination of interactions within and among species is central to the
study of aquatic ecology. Such interactions are mediated by behavior and
metabolism and shaped by evolution. The behavior and interactions of mi-
crobes are simple and provide a basic model for the more complex behav-
iors of macroscopic organisms. Many interactions among microorganisms
