Examples of spam.
Not all email received from a business is spam. Businesses with whom
you have a previous relationship, such as a store where you have ordered
before, might send you promotional emails because you have given
them your email address. You can unsubscribe from such emails with the
Unsubscribe link provided in the email. Beware, however, of using the
Unsubscribe link in a generic mass email that you get from a company
that you have no relationship with. Sometimes unscrupulous spammers
use the Unsubscribe link to confirm that their message has reached an
active email address, and trying to unsubscribe will only get you added
to more spammers' lists.
Is spamming legal? It depends on what country you are in. In the United
States, spam is legal, provided the message conforms to certain formats.
What is most definitely
not
legal is when spam encourages recipients to
visit fake websites and share personal information. That's when spam
becomes phishing.
