Identifying the Path from Source to Destination
To see happens when you type a URL into a web browser to visit a web page, you can use the
tracert
command. It traces the path from the browser to the website, noting all the devices it goes
through en route.
1
Click the Start button, type
cmd
into the Search Programs and Files box, and press Enter.
A command prompt window opens.
2
At the command prompt, type
tracert
followed by a space and then the URL for the website
of your choice (for example,
www.bbc.co.uk
) and press Enter. The command prompt
window will list all the devices that your request travels through before it gets to the chosen
destination. The program will also list the IP address of each device. When the process com-
pletes, the window will say “Trace Complete.”
As you can see, when you send the request, it leaves your computer, goes through your router,
and then passes through a series of other devices between your browser and the destination.
Notice that your request can probably get from one side of the world to the other in about
15 stages or hops—sometimes fewer.
