The best hotels tend to be booked up on Friday and Saturday, and on major festivals
such as San Juan. The busiest season is from May to September, when prices may rise
slightly.
Most budget hotels have bathrooms and fans unless otherwise indicated; midrange
places have air-con and private bathroom, normally with hot water. Walk-in rates for
standard rooms are given here; holiday rates may be higher.

S180-350; ) Sequestered within a serene walled garden away from the city chaos,
this is the most interesting accommodation option. The house takes its title from Werner
Herzog's film − Herzog and co stayed here during the filming of Fitzcarraldo ( Click here
). Stay in the mahogany-floored Mick Jagger room, the luxuriantly green Klaus Kinski
suite or five other individually designed rooms. There is a tree house (with wi-fi!), a
lovely swimming pool (nonresidents S5) and a huge breakfast included in the price, as
well as a bar- restaurant , minicinema and several four-legged residents to check out.

This former mansion of the rubber baron Luis F Morey dates from 1910 and has been ren-
ovated to its former elegance, with 14 suites each large enough to house a fair few hotels
in their entirety. There are plenty of original azulejos, voluminous bathrooms with baths,
river views, a courtyard with a small pool, a library with a stupendous collection of
Amazon-related literature and a grandiose dining area (though the tiling here isn't origin-
al) to enjoy breakfast in.

For a memorable dose of relaxed, rustic Iquitos living, come to crash at this floating
hostel-bar, accessed by boardwalks over the river. Dorms sleep either six or 10. River
views are exquisite and the owner is a mine of intriguing information. After a recent ex-
pansion, the bar has to be the most atmospheric place for a riverside drink in Iquitos.
