In-Depth Information
Sights
North of Oxapampa rear the cloud-capped hills of little-visited Parque Nacional
Yanachaga-Chemillén . The park preserves some spectacular cloud forest and diverse
flora and fauna, including the rare spectacled bear. Visiting the park is complicated. First,
get permission from the INRENA Office ( 46-2544; San Martín, cuadra 2) . Then
take a Pozuzo-bound minibus for 60km to Yuritunqui, where there is a guardabosque
(park-ranger booth). Pay the park entrance fee of S30 here. There are basic bungalows to
stay in nearby. Bring your own bedroll and provisions. Get the Oxapampa office to radio
ahead so that the guards know you're coming.
Festivals & Events
Selvámanos
( www.selvamanos.org , Spanish only) Held in Parque Nacional Yanachaga-Chemillén
every June, is fast becoming one of Peru's most talked-about festivals since its appearance
in 2010. It's a great showcase of Peruvian contemporary music: in case you thought it was
all Andean pipes, get ready for innovative new rock, electronica, reggae and whacky takes
on cumbia . It's also a force behind simultaneously run semana kultura where various mu-
sical/cultural events occur in towns hereabouts.
