SAN RAMÓN
The town itself is unexceptional. However, the best places to stay in this region lie out-
side, on the La Merced road.
Rio Grande Inn $$

Km 97; s/d incl breakfast S90/120; ) This smart and well-appointed hotel is set in
verdant grounds by the Río Chanchamayo. Rooms have wood paneling and minifridges
along with the usual top-end hotel facilities. There is a gorgeous pool and a restaurant
serving light meals and refreshments. Single travelers will pay double room rates at peak
times.

Restaurant Shambari Campa $$
(Tarma 389, La Merced; mains S18-27; 6:30am-12:30am) On the plaza, this famous
hole-in-the-wall restaurant provides a menu so extensive you can be lost for choice, but
includes sensational chancho (rainforest wild pig).

Los Koquis $
(Tarma 376, La Merced; mains S16-25; 11am-11pm) Set back from the plaza down a
leafy passageway, Los Koquis lures punters in with jungle specialties.

Chifa Felipe Siu $
(Progreso 440, San Ramón; meals around S12; 11am-2pm & 6:30-11pm) Locals say
this is the best place to eat Chinese food in the Amazon.

Chanchamayo Highland Coffee
( 53-1198; http://highlandproducts.com.pe ) This is the only place around where you
can sample and buy the coffee for which Chanchamayo is famous. (Peru is one of the
world's largest coffee producers but nearly all gets exported.) It's gimmicky but enjoy-
