bird-watching at 1600m elevation. The owners claim you can get photos of male cocks-
of-the-rock displaying about 7m from your camera. The InkaNatura-owned lodge has a
restaurant and 12 rustic double cabins with private bathrooms and hot water. Rates include
round-trip transportation from Cuzco, which takes on average eight hours (with points-of-
interest stops).

meals US$40) A much cheaper option, and a good journey-breaker, is this rustic lodge
near Pilcopata (you could hit the village nightlife from here if you wanted). There are
eight cabins here sleeping up to 18 people, with shared bathrooms. It's at the base of the
cloud forest (one hour's drive from the best cloud forest bird-watching).

not affiliated with a particular tour agency.

US$85) In an old colonial hacienda in the foothills of the Andes, Amazonia provides trav-
elers with slightly different environs to bed down (although a refurbishment is overdue).
Expect clean, comfortable beds and communal hot showers. The lodge has forest trails,
excellent bird-watching (guided tours are offered), blissfully few mosquitoes and no elec-
tricity. The lodge can make transportation arrangements, or tour agencies in Cuzco can
make reservations. As it's just across the river from Atalaya, you can usually charter a loc-
al boat to ferry you across.
