There are several good lodges on this route. While none are in the z ona reservada or the
zona natural of Parque Nacional Manu, they nevertheless can provide great wildlife-
watching opportunities. Don't assume entering the zona reservada is an automatic guaran-
tee of seeing better wildlife. Lodges are congregated either in the cloud forest or on the
Río Alto Madre de Dios after Atalaya: most let independent tourists stay, but tour groups
on lodge-affiliated tours get priority. If you are set on staying at one of the following, it's
advisable to reserve at least a night in advance. For simplicity, lodges are listed in distance
order from Cuzco.

Manu Paradise Lodge $$$
( 084-22-4156; www.manuparadiselodge.com ; Urb Magisterio 2da etapa, Cuzco; s/d
incl meals US$85/140) Around six hours from Cuzco and overlooking the scenic Río
Kosñipata valley, this lodge sleeps 16 people in spacious rooms with private hot-water
bathrooms. It looks quite modern, unlike the more rustic lodges further into the park.
Among its assets are an attractive dining room-bar with a fireplace and telescopes for
wildlife viewing. It advertises its wide variety of tours (three to six nights) on its website.
Rafting and mountain-biking tours can be arranged, but the primary attraction is bird-
watching.
