(Velarde 515; snacks S3-8; 8am-1pm & 5-11pm) It's become a tad complacent, but
this cafe is still decent enough to stand out against most: it serves varied breakfasts, ta-
males , great juices, snacks and Puerto Maldonado's best coffee.

(Jirón 26 de Diciembre 241; mains S18-30; 7:30am-3pm) This is the place to feast on
great freshwater ceviche (raw seafood marinated in lime juice), as the contingent of local
dignitaries clearly think: there's a nice decked seating area out back with river views.

PERUVIAN
Restaurant $
(cnr Av 2 de Mayo & Madre de Dios; mains S10-15; dinner) It may have no name,
street number or phone number but this place is far from unknown by the locals, who
flock here for great fish with rice and plátano . Food is prepared on a grill outside and
tables fill up fast.
Burgos's House $$

(Velarde 127; mains S15-23; 11am-midnight) This has quickly developed into Puerto
Maldonado's stand-out restaurant. It calls itself an exponent of novo-amazonica cuisine -
that's like novo-andino, only instead making those bold culinary adaptations to food from
the jungle − but this is more about dependable Peruvian Amazon staples, cooked to per-
fection rather than with particular innovation. It's a large, airy, courteously staffed restaur-
ant and serves plenty of vegetarian dishes alongside its fish-focused specialties. Another
branch is at Puno 106.
