In-Depth Information
(San Martín 109; snacks S7-10, breakfast S12-20; )
This modern corner cafe is the
spot to double-down on serious espresso and people watching. Light snacks and desserts
or a quick regional breakfast of softball-sized
juanes
are served as well. It's very popular
with gringos and caffeine aficionados.
El Rincón Sureño $$$
(Leguia 458; steaks S20-63)
The nicest restaurant in town is a swish-looking establish-
ment with intimate wood-lined rooms, rounded out by myriad archways, farmstead
paraphernalia and cummerbund-bound waiters. Locals swear the meat is top notch, but we
were sorely disappointed with our S25
bife a la pimienta
. Maybe you have to splash out
for the S65
bife de chorizo,
a superior cut of Peruvian beef prepared Argentine style? For
Tarapoto, the wine list is impressive.
STEAKHOUSE
Banana's Burgers $
(Calle de Morey 102; burgers S5-14; to 4am)
Bar stool burger bar and regional juices.
BURGERS
Supermercado la Inmaculada $
(Calle de Compagnon 126; 8:30am-10pm)
This supermarket has everything you might
need for self-catering.
SELF-CATERING
Drinking
La Alternativa
(Grau 401; 9am-8pm)
Like drinking in a medieval pharmacy or maybe a Taratino film,
a night out here harkens to a time when alcohol was literally medicine (like, for ailments,
not for your emotional problems); and your local apothecary was the place to get sauced
on God knows what elixir happened upon the inside of a bottle. Shelves here are stacked
pharmaceutical-style with dusty bottles containing
uvachado
and other 15 other
homemade natural concoctions based on soaking roots, vines etc in cane liquor. The
moody lighting and roaming acoustic guitar-wielding songster are bonuses.
