( 52-2439; Prado 341; s/d/tr from S25/45/50) The skinny, leafy courtyard that frames
the rooms redeems the typically modest dwelling here. Tiny bathrooms with cold water
leave little maneuvering room, but you get a TV and ceiling fan - good shoestring value.
No extra charge for the kitschy '80s office furniture.

) This kitschy lower midrange choice has a palm-fringed 3rd-floor and inviting
pool that gives it an edge in this price range, though the spacious rooms are nothing spe-
cial and truth be told, could do with a visit from the fashion police. Amenities include a
gym, restaurant and conference center tucked away among the maze of cheery floors.

Eating
Don't leave Tarapoto without trying inchicapi (chicken soup with peanuts, cilantro and
yucca) or juanes (steamed rice with fish or chicken, wrapped in a banana leaf).

( www.lapatarashca.com ; San Pablo de la Cruz 362; mains S13-32; ) Outstanding re-
gional Amazon cuisine is on tap in Patarashca's casual 2nd-floor dining room. Don't miss
the salad made of chonta, thin strips of a local hearts of palm, with avocados doused in
vinaigrette; or the namesake patarashcas, heaping platters of giant shrimp or fish served
soaking in a warm bath of tomatoes, sweet peppers, onions, garlic and sacha culantro (a
type of cilantro) wrapped in a bijao leaf. Avoid wild paiche from October to February,
which its commercial fishing is prohibited due to near commercial extinction.
