This tranquil choice offers rooms surrounding a well-manicured garden where you'll also
find a few strewn hammocks and a pleasant breakfast nook. Rooms are small, but
everything is new and shiny and little touches of knickknack charm here and there and a
homespun vibe give it a leg up on the competition.
Hospedaje Bet-El $
( 56-2796; www.moyobambabetel.com ; Callao 517-537; s/d/tr incl breakfast S41/57/
85) You'll have to suck up the Christian imagery, but if that's not an issue, this is a solid
choice with rooms emptying out onto an interior atrium that a very funky tree calls home.
There's oddly no hot water (purportedly on the way) but the espresso served in the at-
tached cafe is scalding - perhaps the best reason to choose here.
GUESTHOUSE
Hospedaje Santa Rosa $
( 50-9890; Canga 478; s/d from S15/30; ) A great shoestring pick with a few
rudimentary, cold water rooms set around a brick patio. The occasional potted plant helps
liven up the concrete-jungle feel. Ask for one with a toilet seat unless you prefer sitting on
the rim.
GUESTHOUSE
La Olla de Barro $$
( www.laolladebarro.com ; Canga at Filomeno; mains S6-18; closed dinner
Sun) Double dare your friends to go for the fried ants or alligator at this local institution
set up tiki lounge-style, all while you savor the phenomenal inchicapi (chicken soup with
peanuts, cilantro and yucca). This is the best place in town to sample local jungle dishes
and besides the aforementioned best soup ever, you'll find loads of river fish (avoid en-
dangered wild paiche from October to February, when its commercial fishing is prohibited
due to near commercial extinction) and exotic regional fruit sours like camu-camu and
cocona to chase it all down with. Don't miss it.
AMAZONIAN, REGIONAL
El Matador $
(Puno C-2; mains S15-20; from 6pm Mon-Sat) Great little upscale (for Moyobamba)
steakhouse serving chicken and just five slabs of carne on the parilla: sirloin, tri-tip, beef-
steak, pork chop and barbecue ribs. There are a few more reds on the wine list than aver-
age, but that inviting patio is perfect for a cold, cold Cusqueña.
