AMAL
(San Augustín 429; 9am-6pm) Located on the plaza, AMAL is a women's artisan co-
operative selling top-grade handicrafts and local weavings. Better than the shop, however,
is heading up to their small workshop about a five-minute walk along the road to the mu-
seum. Here, you can see them in action as well as pick out your own material to custom
design anything from backpacks and decorative computer cases to purses and tablecloths.

Getting There & Away
Hidalgo Tours Offline map Google map ( 94-194-0571; Bolívar 608) departs for
Chachapoyas (S10, 2½ hours) at 5am and 6:30am daily. Poderoso Cautivo (
94-194-0571; San Agustín 314) goes at 5am and 7am daily for the same price. Transpor-
tes Karlita ( 97-194-3024; cnr Amazonas & 16 de Julio) is the early bird, heading out
at 4am and 5am. Reserve a seat the night before. A taxi to Chachapoyas costs between
S100 and S120. Virgin del Carmen ( 96-483-3033; Plaza de Armas) has a daily bus
to Chachapoyas (S10, 2½ hours) from Celendín that passes through at about 3pm. In the
reverse direction, heading toward Celendín (S25, five hours) and Cajamarca (S30, eight
hours), they pass at about 8am. Occasional trucks and private vehicles pick up paying pas-
sengers to Chachapoyas and Celendín.
