and you can usually find a more expensive colectivo waiting here alongside the office to
gather up those that couldn't get a seat. Transportes Hidalgo ( 94-194-0571; cnr
Grau & Pasaje Reina) departs for Leimebamba (S10, 2½ hours) at 12:30pm and 4pm

Getting directly to Kuélap independently is a bit of a pain and requires an early rise.

that goes to Tingo Viejo, María and on to La Marca, where you'll find the ticket booth and
parking lot for Kuélep, returning at 6am. It's a 15-minute walk along a stone sidewalk to
the ruins from there. Otherwise, frequent minibuses and colectivo taxis for Tingo Viejo
and María depart from the 300 cuadra of Grau, from where you'll need to leg an addition-
al two hours (from María) or five to six hours (from Tingo Viejo).
To continue further into the Amazon Basin, Los Diplimaticos Offline map Google map (
96-450-9665; Arrieto, cuadra 4) runs combis to Pedro Ruíz every 15 minutes between
4am and 6pm . At the crossroads, you can wait for an eastbound bus to continue on to
Tarapoto (S35, seven hours), which pass most frequently between 4pm and 11pm. Ask
around for trucks and minibuses to other destinations. To reach Jaén and the border route
to Ecuador ( Click here ) , you'll need to catch a combi to Bagua Grande, which also leave
frequently from the 300 cuadra of Grau at Pasaje Reina and switch for a colectivo to Jaén
(S7 to S10, one hour).
If you start early and have plenty of time on your hands, you can see some of the attrac-
tions around Chachapoyas by public minibus.

Relics of Chachapoyas and Inca civilizations and daring, rugged scenery speckle the
mountains surrounding Chachapoyas. Scores of archaeological sites dot this area, most of
them unexcavated and many reclaimed by vivacious jungle. Following is a list of some of
