Don't miss the tiny entrance on
the town's Plaza de Armas; it opens into a large, Dutch-orange cafe selling what might be
the best ice cream in northern Peru. The staff will shower you with samples of the 20 or so
changing flavors, the best of which are local, and regional fruits that the Dutch owner
buys direct from family farms following a Fair Trade philosophy. In addition to the
sweets, staff members are single mothers and the deaf, an ongoing social project started
by the owner. It has locations at El Quinde Shopping Center and Los Baños del Inca as
well.

Querubino is a classy spot with real chefs do-
ing upscale versions of Peruvian classics as well as the occasional creative curveball and
seasonally changing specials. The menu is dominated by meat and seafood dishes, but try
the off menu spaghetti
a la huancaina,
a wondrous invention of fresh pasta doused in
huancaina
sauce (fresh white cheese,
ají amarillo
) with
lomo fino
(tenderloin) - it's
creamy, rich and delicious.

Tucked away near the plaza, Don Paco has a
big following among both residents and expats. There's something for everyone here, in-
cluding typical breakfasts and great renditions of Peruvian favorites, as well as more
sophisticated
novocaxamarquino
(new Cajamarcan) fare such as chicken cordon bleu with
Andean ham and local cheese in a pomegranate sauce and a recommended duck breast
with
sauco
(elderberry) sauce.

This wildly popular hipster hamburger and sandwich joint features an extensive menu of
ridiculous handheld drunken eats along with a few veggie choices (with an explanation as
to what 'vegetarian' means). The tasty food is very convenient as it is a rowdy bar as well.
