In-Depth Information
Sleeping & Eating
Chavín has a surprisingly good selection of accommodations. Camping by the ruins is
also possible with permission of the guard.
Most of the town's eateries can be found along Calle 17 de Enero Sur and in hotels.
Restaurants have a reputation for closing soon after sunset, so dig in early.
Hostal Chavín Turístico $$
( 45-4051; soniavalenciapozo@hotmail.com; Maytacapac 120; s/d S40/80; ) This
new, family-run option is the best place to stay, offering well-appointed rooms with cute
bedspreads, large bathrooms and - perhaps most refreshingly - no chipped paint or rusty
pipes. It's clean as a whistle, well-maintained and closer to the ruins than the plaza op-
tions. There's no internet per se, but the owners have a 3G modem you can use with your
laptop or theirs.
GUESTHOUSE
La Casona $
( 45-4116; www.lacasonachavin.com.pe ; Plaza de Armas 130; s/d/tr S35/60/90)
Nestled in an old house, the well-kept rooms here are a little on the dark side, but the
beautiful courtyard, overflowing with plants, is an excellent place to hang out and soak up
the ambience. Some rooms have a TV or a plaza balcony. There's an American manager
who has raised local eyebrows with his San Pedro cultivation and aspirations for a resort
overlooking the ruins.
GUESTHOUSE
Hostal Inca $
( 45-4021; enrique9541@hotmail.com; Plaza de Armas; s/d S30/60) The reputation of
this secure, popular place is as solid as its colonial foundations and boasts very respect-
able rooms (though showers are weak and tight). There's a small garden tended by the
somewhat cranky couple that runs it. Hostal Inca also houses the lab for the ongoing ex-
cavation project of the ruins.
GUESTHOUSE
Buongiorno $$
(Calle 17 de Enero Sur s/n; mains S17-38; 7am-7pm) Churning out sophist-
icated dishes that outpunch its location's weight class, Buongiorno is a pleasant surprise in
a cordial urban garden setting. The lomo a la pimienta, a Peruvian fave of grilled steak in
wine, cream and cracked-pepper sauce (S27), is three-star Lima quality and the trout
ceviche is also a popular choice.
