(S7-20) Surrounded by gardens just off the main highway at the north end of town,
Alpamayo is a pleasant spot, complete with a garden gazebo, to dig into some trout, cuy
(guinea pig) or chicharrĂ³nes (breaded and fried).

toward the Lagunas Llanganuco, this recommended lodge run by Brit Charlie Good is in a
prime position for exploring the lakes area or charging the Santa Cruz trek. Choose camp-
ing with hot-water showers and breathtaking views or lodge rooms with down-feather
beds and balconies.
Tito, an aspiring chef, handles the excellent food and Shackleton and Dino, two
Rhodesian Ridgebacks, handle mascot duties. It sits next to newly excavated Keushu ruins
on the shore of an ancient lagoon with views of the three highest peaks in the range. From
Yungay, taxis departing in front of the town hospital charge S30 for the ride up and S40 to
come back down.

the Humacchuco community maintain a comfortable guest house as part of an established
sustainable-tourism program. Here visitors can learn about the local culture and natural-
resource management, savor a pachamanca and go on guided hikes, including a day trip
