In-Depth Information
Carhuaz' annual La Virgen de La Merced fiesta is celebrated from September 14 to
24 with processions, fireworks, dancing, bullfights and plenty of drinking - so much that
the town is often referred to as Carhuaz borachera (drunk Carhuaz)!
You'll find a Banco de la Nación Offline map with a Visa/Plus ATM on the Plaza de
Armas.
Sleeping & Eating
Don't miss the town's ubiquitous treat, raspadilla, a slurpee of Cordillera Blanca glacier
ice slathered in fruity syrup.
Hostal El Abuelo $$
( 39-4456; www.elabuelohostal.com ; Calle 9 de Diciembre 257; s/d incl
breakfast S105/140; ) The haughtiest place to stay in town is this excellent boutique
inn, which has immaculate and charming rooms within a large, older-styled house. All
matrimonial rooms feature king-sized beds. A new annex is under construction, which
will offer Andean views.

HOTEL
Hotel La Merced $
( 39-4280; Ucayali 724; s/d without bathroom S20/40, r S45) One of the town's oldest
running ventures, boasting lots of windows for cordillera adulation and plenty of religious
posters for internal speculation. Rooms are clean and have hot showers.
GUESTHOUSE
Alojamiento Cordillera Blanca $
( 94-389-7678; Aurora 247; s/d S24/45) Forget hospitality, but if you want to arrive
Saturday night and wake up in the thick of the market, here are cramped but clean rooms.
Café Arte Andino El Abuelo $
(Plaza de Armas; breakfast S4-10, sandwiches S6-14) This pleasant plaza cafe is owned
by local architect/cartographer Felipe Díaz (you probably have his map) and is the best
spot to eat as well as shop. Nice ceramics, hand-woven bags and wall textiles are available
here as well as Díaz' maps and local information.
CAFE, PERUVIAN
Gerardos Chickens $
(cnr 2 de Mayo & La Merced) Does better roasted chicken than most for S8 to S15. It's
across from the Huaraz terminal.
