Dangers & Annoyances
Time to acclimatize is important. The altitude here will make you feel breathless and may
give you a headache during your first few days, so don't overexert yourself. The surround-
ing mountains will cause altitude sickness if you venture into them without spending a
few days acclimatizing in Huaraz first. See Click here f or more advice on altitude sick-
ness.
Huaraz is a safe city that experiences little crime; unfortunately, robberies of trekkers
and tourists do happen, especially in the area of the Mirador de Retaqeñua and the
Wilkahuaín (sometimes also spelled Wilcawain) ruins, and early in the morning when
groggy backpackers arrive on overnight buses. In these cases, stay alert and walk with a
group or hire a taxi to avoid problems.
Emergency
Casa de Guías ( 42-1811; www.casadeguias.com.pe ; Parque Ginebra 28G;
9am-1pm & 4-8pm Mon-Sat) Offers safety and rescue courses and will save your life if
you get into trouble in the mountains - but only if you're trekking or climbing with one of
their guides certified by the Mountain Guide Association (AGM). Ask for a list of guides
or see the website. Register here before heading out on a trek or climb.
Policía de Turismo ( 42-1351; Plaza de Armas; 8am-8pm) On the west side of the
Plaza de Armas. Some officers speak limited English.
Medical Services
