Steel Guest House $$
( 42-9709; www.steelguest.com ; Pasaje Maguina 1467; s/d incl breakfast S110/145;
) The perfect midrange choice. The rooms at this charming guesthouse are wonder-
fully styled with Andean textiles and are white-glove clean right down to the beautiful
hardwood floors. The owner tends to dote on her guests, making it feel a little like staying
at grandma's house. Loads of facilities round out the offerings, including cable TV, out-
door hammocks, billiards, steam room and a gorgeous roof terrace strewn with potted
plants and dead-shot views to Huascarán.

) This smart little hotel has a boutique feel, spacious bathrooms and comfortable beds, but
the best part is the big lounge area upstairs and massive panoramic terrace. The owner is
an established figure in the Huaraz trekking and tourism scene; he can provide advice no
matter where you want to go (so long as he's around). Bus station pickup is included.

Hotel Colomba $$
( 42-1501; www.huarazhotel.com ; Francisco de Zela 210; s/d incl breakfast from
S150/200; ) The rooms at this wonderfully surprising oasis are speckled around a
dense and compulsively trimmed hedge forest, some spilling out onto a long, relaxing ver-
anda. The sprawling gardens conceal a kids' playground, making it a great choice for fam-
ilies looking for secure and enclosed grounds for their kids to safely run amok. It's a little
north of the action, which is another plus for families.

Andino Club Hotel $$$
( 42-1662; www.hotelandino.com ; Pedro Cochachín 357; s/d from S280/338, d with
balcony S433; ) Because the structure itself feels a little bit too much like a chain
hotel, you sacrifice on cozy charm at this 54-room, Swiss-run hotel, but the immaculate
rooms all have great views and are packed with the requisite mod cons. Balcony rooms
are worth the splurge for the postcard views to Huascarán peak, wood-burning fireplaces
and plant-lined terraces.
The on-site restaurant, Chalet Suisse, serves international and Peruvian food in addition
to Swiss specialties.
