Especially during the high season, locals meet buses from Lima and offer inexpensive
accommodations in their houses. Hostels also employ individuals to meet buses, but be-
ware of scams or overpricing - don't pay anybody until you've seen the room.

ade. Immaculate and comfortable rooms share cushy, colorful lounging areas on every
floor. The building is topped by a massive, fireplace-warmed lounge space with magnifi-
cent 180-degree views of the Cordillera. If that isn't enough, the affable Quirós family, es-
pecially the heir to this tourism throne, Juan, are consummate hosts and offer a cafe and
bar, communal kitchen and a travel office that rents out trekking gear and arranges Span-
ish lessons. It's so popular, a new, equally homey annex, Churup II, has opened a block
over on Arguedas. Reservations essential.

) A fetching white-walled and red-roofed urban sanctuary, this four-story hotel is a
neocolonial architectural find. Balconies and arches overlook a grassy garden and inner
courtyard with a soothing fountain, and all rooms have a writing desk, good beds, hot
shower and cable TV. Most have balconies as well, but if you don't get one, there are
plenty of communal terraces on various floors.
It's a soothing, tranquil spot to come back to after a day on the trails.
