In-Depth Information
(cnr Sánchez Cerro & Tacna; mains for 2 S22-32)
Peruvian Chinese restaurants almost al-
ways guarantee a good meal and this nearly fancy
chifa
is no exception. It's a bummer
about the street noise, but the food is fresh and flavorful and the perfect antidote when you
tire of ceviche.
Heladería el Chalán $
(Tacna 520; snacks S6.50-19)
This fast-food joint has numerous outlets whipping up bur-
gers and sandwiches, but our money's on the excellent selection of juices and the dozens
of flavors of cool, cool ice cream. Try
manjar blanco
(milk caramel), try
límon
(lime) -
it's all so good, you'll wish the owners canvassed Piura less and spread the love to
Chiclayo and Trujillo.
Additional branches at Grau 173 and 453.
DESSERTS
Snack Bar Romano $
(Ayacucho 580; menús S6-22, mains S7.50-15; closed Sun)
With an excellent list of
several daily
menús,
this local favorite has been around as long as its middle-aged waiters.
It gets the double thumbs-up for ceviches,
sudados
and local specialties.
BREAKFAST, PERUVIAN
Don Parce $$
(
www.donparce.com
;
Tacna 642; mains S16-33; )
Immensely pleasant spot serving a
long list of Peruvian standards as well as daily specials in a convenient, colonial atmo-
sphere off the Plaza de Armas. The best deal is a three-course lunch
menú,
always with a
hearty, meaty main dish.
BREAKFAST, PERUVIAN
El Uruguayo $$$
(cnr Guardia Civil & Cayeta, Centro Commercial Miraflores; steaks S25-70; from
6:30pm)
Beef lovers unite at this Uruguayan steakhouse that has fallen out of favor in
Trujillo but remains fresh meat, so to speak, in Piura. Cuts range from 200g to 500g and
are categorized by region (Uruguay, Argentina, América) and they do a bang up job with
the condiments (
chimichurri,
vinaigrette,
ají
). It's a serious steakhouse, which is scarce
in these parts.
