Eating
Chiclayo is one of the best places to eat on the North Coast. Arroz con pato a la chiclay-
ana (duck and rice cooked in cilantro and beer) and tortilla de manta raya (Spanish om-
elet made from stingray) are endless sources of culinary pride. For dessert, try the local
street sweet called a King Kong, a large cookie filled with a sweet caramel cream made of
milk and sugar; it's available everywhere. If you are aching for a coffee that didn't come
from a tin of Nescafe, there's a Starbucks at C.C. Real Plaza.
Fiesta Chiclayo Gourmet $$$
( 20-1970; www.restaurantfiestagourmet.com ; Salaverry 1820; mains
S35-49) Few things are as satisfying as scraping those last bits of slightly charred rice off
the bottom of an iron-clad pan and savoring all that's great about a rice dish like arroz con
pato a la chiclayana, made here with farm-raised duck that must be a black-feathered
quacker not a day over three months old.
Blindsiding your palette with a wholly unexpected delight is ceviche a la brasa, tradi-
tional raw fish served warm in cornhusks after an 11th-hour searing. The pisco sours are
constructed tableside, service is exquisite, and the best of this region's world-famous
cuisine is outrageously great. Call for a reservation here or visit a sister restaurant in Lima
( Click here ) , Trujillo or Tacna. A S5 taxi ride covers the 2km from the centre.
REGIONAL
El Pescador $
(San José 1236; mains S10-20; 11am-6pm) This little local's secret packs in the droves
for outstanding seafood and regional dishes at laughable prices. The ceviches here (S10 to
S12) are every bit as good as places charging double or even triple the price; and weekend
specials like cabrito con frijoles (goat with beans; Saturday) and arroz con pato (duck
with rice; Sunday) are steals at under S14.
Owner Oscar and his brother (the chef) work their tails off to make sure you're happy.

El Ferrocol $
Offline map
(Las Américas 168; mains S13-27; 9am-7pm) This brash hole-in-the-wall, a little out
of the center, is well worth the trip, but not for the service or atmosphere. Chef Lucho pre-
pares some of the best ceviche in all of Chiclayo, served here with lovely fried tortitas de
chocla (fried corn patties). There's eight to choose from along with the usual standards.
