DANCE
Fiesta de la Marinera
This is the national marinera contest; held in the last week in January.
El Festival Internacional de la Primavera
(International Spring Festival) Trujillo's major festival is celebrated with parades, nation-
al dancing competitions (including, of course, the marinera ), caballos de paso displays,
sports, international beauty contests and other cultural activities. It all happens in the last
week in September and better hotels are booked out well in advance.

Decent budget places are thin on the ground in Trujillo, but pay a little extra and you'll be
soaking up colonial ambience. Some travelers prefer to stay in the nearby beach town of
Huanchaco. Many midrange hotels can be noisy if you get the streetside rooms. For a city
of its size and history, Trujillo lags way behind when it comes to design and boutique ho-
tels (OK, there are none). It pays to inquire about environmental policies at hotels here -
some have been accused of burning carbon mineral bricks at night as a source for heating
water, an environmentally damaging (but cheap) practice that is prohibited in Peru de-
pending on emission levels.

This tastefully renovated, rose-colored colonial mansion (now HI-affiliated, though not a
hostel) has a great location just a block from the Plaza de Armas. Chatty and helpful staff,
a tour desk, popular cafe (with room service), gorgeous courtyards, open spaces and a
garden synergistically come together to keep attracting travelers. Some of the cozy rooms
have balconies and great views of Iglesia de San Francisco opposite.
