style, it has beautiful window gratings, 36 slender interior columns and gold moldings on
the ceilings. General Juan Manuel Iturregui lived here after he famously proclaimed inde-
pendence. Today, it's a private social club, so visits are restricted. You can pop into the in-
terior courtyard any time of day but visiting the ornate rooms is restricted to the listed
opening hours.

seum features a rundown of Peruvian history from 12,000 BC to the present day, with an
emphasis on Moche, Chimu and Inca civilizations as well as the lesser-known Cupisnique
and Salinar cultures. But it's also worth popping in for the house itself, a restored 17th-
century mansion known as La Casa Risco which features striking cedar pillars and gor-
geous painted courtyard walls.

(Pizarro 620; 9am-1pm & 4-8pm Mon-Sat) Now the Banco Continental building, this
hodgepodge of colonial and Republican styles is where Trujillo's independence from co-
lonial rule was formally declared on December 29, 1820. Check out the unique cubic Ca-
jabamba marble stone flooring; there are also galleries dedicated to revolving art exhibi-
tions, Peruvian poet César Vallejo and period furniture. It hosts live music events as well -
look for posters around town on your visit.

Casona Orbegoso

(Orbegoso 553) Named after a former president of Peru, this beautiful 18th-century corner
manor is home to a collection of well-worn art and period furnishings, but its stuck-in-
time feel is being increasingly insured by its ongoing closure for renovations. There was
no estimated reopening date when we came through.

Additional buildings worth a flyby are the 17th-century Iglesia de la Merced Offline map

painted on the wall, an economical shortcut when funds ran out for a more traditional gold
