In-Depth Information
Eating
The chifa at Hostal Chifa Canton (Bolognesi 498; mains S8.50-35.50) is superb. For es-
presso and higher-end Peruvian fusion, try Capuccino Café (Villavicencio 455; mains
S20-30) . There are plenty of good spots along Bolognesi and Pardo in the vicinity of
Plaza de Armas as well.
Getting There & Away
Bus
For Casma (S6, 45 minutes), colectivos depart from the corner of Pardo and Balta.
All long-distance buses leave from the Terminal Terrestre, about 5km east of town (S6
taxi ride or catch colectivo 25 on Pardo for S1.50). America Express ( 35-1911) has
buses leaving for Trujillo every 15 minutes from 5:25am to 9:30pm. Dozens of companies
run mostly overnight buses to Lima, leaving between 10pm and midnight, though a few
depart in daylight. Reputable companies, several of which also have offices lined up along
Bolognesi with the banks, include Oltursa ( 35-3585; www.oltursa.pe ) , Línea (
35-4000; www.linea.pe ) , Civa ( 35-1808; www.turismociva.com ) and Cruz Del Sur (
35-2665; www.cruzdelsur.com.pe ) . The latter has the most frequent and most com-
fortable departures at 11am, 2:30pm, 11:15pm and 11:30pm.
Buses to Huaraz and the Cordillera Blanca run along one of three routes: via the
dazzling yet rough road through the Cañón del Pato ( Click here ) , via an equally rough
road that climbs through the mountains from Casma, or via the longer, comfortably paved
route through Pativilca. Travel times on these routes range from seven to nine hours. Yun-
gay Express ( 35-0855) has an 8:30am bus to Caraz and Huaraz through the Cañón
del Pato and 1pm and 10pm buses via Casma. Movil Tours ( 35-3616;
www.moviltours.com.pe ) has 12:30pm, 11:10pm, 11:50pm and 12:30am departures to
Huaraz via Casma that also stop in Caraz. It pays to book Huaraz buses a day in advance.
Sample travel times and costs from Chimbote are shown in the table (prices fluctuate
with the quality of the bus/classes).
