Information
There have been reports of travelers being robbed and raped at gunpoint en route to des-
tinations within Parque Nacional Tingo María. It is strongly recommended that you do not
venture into the countryside around Tingo without a guide and ensure you return well be-
fore dark. Increased police protection at key park attractions has improved security some-
what, but remember that this is a remote area. Furthermore, the Huallaga valley that runs
north of Tingo to Tarapoto is a cocaine production area and also one of the last bastions of
the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path; see the boxed text,

)
. Risk to tourists
from drugs traffickers and the Sendero Luminoso is very low but care should still be
taken.
