Festivals & Events
Huancavelica's vibrant fiestas are renowned and, due to the mostly indigenous population,
feel particularly authentic. Colorful traditional festivities occur on major Peruvian holi-
days, such as Carnaval, Semana Santa, Todos Santos and Christmas. Huancavelica's Sem-
ana Turística (Tourism Week) is held in late September and early October. Check with the
INC for upcoming festivals.
Fiesta de las Cruces
The festival of the crosses is held for six days in May during which revelers bear crosses,
local bands play music in the plazas and proceedings culminate in bull fights.

Huancavelica does in fact boast more than a dozen places to stay, though most of them are
budget to superbudget options that don't offer hot water. There's always the town's natural
mineral baths to soak away the aches and pains. The better places to stay follow.

( 45-1050; Toledo 252; s/d S40/65, s/d without bathroom S15/20) This bright new of-
fering has filled the long-standing gap between the budget places and the Presidente in the
accommodations scene. It's very traveler-friendly: cozy (and spotless) rooms are done up
in welcoming orange, have cable TV and hot water and center on a quiet courtyard.

( /fax 45-2760; Plaza de Armas; s/d inc breakfast S195/215, backpacker rooms s/d

for what you actually get, although the location couldn't be better. Rooms are plain but do
benefit from guaranteed hot showers, telephone, cable TV and a laundry service - not to
forget a handy restaurant. It's also shown their powers of adaptability by offering some of
its rooms out to backpackers at discounted prices. These are clean, decent lodgings, but
breakfast isn't included.
