ural thermal springs, from which Aguas Calientes derives its name, are nice enough but
far from the best in the area (that would be Santa Teresa's Cocalmayo), and get scummy

Putucusi
For those who still have energy left for trekking, the steep hike up this toothy mini-moun-
tain, directly opposite Machu Picchu, is highly recommended. Follow the railway tracks
about 250m west of town and you'll see a set of stairs; this is the start of a well-marked
trail. Parts of the walk are up ladders, which get slippery in the wet season, but the view
across to Machu Picchu is worth the trek. Allow three hours.

Lodgings here are consistently overpriced - probably costing two-thirds more than similar
counterparts in less-exclusive locations. Bargain hospedajes can be found in the area up-
hill of the souvenir market; few are cheaper than Hospedaje los Caminantes and Hostal
John.

tages (many with their own private pool) connected by stone pathways are pure indul-
gence. The devil is in the details: iPod docks, subtle, classy decor, and showers with glass
walls looking out onto lush vegetation. The onsite spa features a bamboo-eucalyptus
sauna, but the best feature are the guided excursions included in your stay.
Choose from bilingual tours for bird watching, tea plantation visits and orchid walks, or
take a trip to the hotel's conservation site protecting the rare Andean spectacled bear.
Rates include half-board and kids under 12 stay for free.

the middle of town. Lofty ceilings, burnished steel and oversized nature photos create a
cool, stripped down atmosphere, though the stark, all-white rooms take it a little too far.
Perks include enjoying a welcome pisco sour at the stylish bar and the enormous buffet
