( 25-5134; Ruinas 415, 2nd fl; menĂº S15, mains from S22; 9am-11:30pm; ) The
stuffed animals, board games and decor perfectly evoke the circus you dreamed of run-
ning away with as a child. Aldea Yanapay is pitched at families but will appeal to anyone
with a taste for the quixotic. Food includes burritos, falafel and tasty little fried things to
pick at, and there's a whole separate menu for vegetarians.
Profits go to projects helping abandoned children. Highly recommended.

( 23-2522; www.hotelarqueologo.com ; Pumacurco 408; mains S25-35; 12-3pm &
6-11pm Mon-Sat) With sopranos singing live arias, this unusual upscale eatery fills a
small niche of romantic dining with entertainment. The food combines Peruvian ingredi-
ents with Mediterranean influences; start with tapas, a notable specialty is duck, slow-
cooked to utter tenderness, or maybe that's what you're feeling just before the music
stops.

( Santa Catalina Ancha 384; menu S8; 6:30am-10pm; ) Incredibly economical, this
vegetarian restaurant offers set lunch with a salad bar starter, rib-sticking barley soup and
mains like tofu and wilted veggies with rice. What it lacks in subtlety, it makes up for in
abundance. There's a second location with more limited hours at Choquechaca 136.

( Marquez 263; mains S10; 6:30am-10pm) This old-fashioned cafe is beloved by Per-
uvians. Longtime staff chat up clients and serve traditional pastries like lengua de suegra
and pork sandwiches. Traditional breakfasts are worth trying and coffee is roasted the tra-
ditional local way - with orange, sugar and onion peels.
