In-Depth Information
Puno at short notice through Cedesos or the travel agencies. Activities include fishing,
dancing, cooking and helping till the family chakras (fields).
ESCALLANI
You could spend days ogling the majestic views of reed beds, patchwork fields, craggy
rocks and the perennially snowcapped Illimani (Bolivia's highest mountain). The lake
takes on a completely different aspect from the settlement of Escallani, located off the
peninsula and on the way to Juliaca. Rufino ( 951-64-5325, Spanish only) and his
large family have built a rambling complex of more than a dozen rustic, straw-thatched
cabins high above the town. Rufino doesn't have telephone service; to reserve a spot, call
his relatives in Juliaca well in advance. This area is a little more ready than other com-
munities to receive guests unannounced - ask around at the plaza to find his place. There
are also rumors of rock-climbing areas.
The trip from Juliaca to Escallani via Pusi by local micro is highly recommended for
hardy travelers. The scenery on this unpaved, little-traveled road is unparalleled - sit on
the left side of the bus if you're heading from Juliaca to Escallani so that you can see the
lake.
Getting There & Around
From Puno, catch a combi advertising either Capachica or Llachón from outside the Mer-
cado Bellavista. All will stop in Capachica (S4, 80 minutes) . From the plaza here contin-
ue to Llachón (S2, 45 minutes) or other destinations.
For Ccotos (S1.50, 35 minutes) or Escallani (S2.50, 45 minutes), combis leave the plaza
of Capachica only on Sundays from 8am to 2pm. You could also take a taxi (S15) or mo-
totaxi (S10) to Ccotos; it's a bit steeper for Escallani (S40).
For Chifrón, there is no public transport. Take a taxi from Capachica (S10) or mototaxi
(S7). Alternately, you can hike over the hill from Llachón, or walk the 3km from Capach-
ica.
Llachón is also accessible via the Taquile ferry. The easiest way to combine the two is
to arrive by road, then have your host family in Llachón show you where to catch the
ferry to Taquile.
