Around Juliaca

This charming little town, 36km northwest of Juliaca, is known as La Ciudad Rosada (the
Pink City) for its dusty, pink-colored buildings. A significant commercial center in coloni-
al days, it still shows a strong Spanish influence. It's an excellent place to kill a few hours
before flying out of Juliaca, or to spend a quiet night.
STRANGEST SIGHTS
Even if you don't believe in tales of alien colonies and strange sightings, Lake Titicaca has no shortage of the sur-
real.

Iglesia de Santiago Apostol
(tour S10; 9am-12:30pm, 2-4pm) Well worth seeing and the pride of locals, this beau-
tifully constructed lime-mortar church is rife with fascinating features. Among other
things, a life-sized sculpture of the Last Supper; a model of Santiago (St James) atop a
real stuffed horse, returning from the dead to trample the Moors; creepy catacombs; secret
tunnels; and a huge domed tomb topped by a wonderful copy of Michelangelo's Pietà. It's
also lined with hundreds of skeletons arranged in a ghoulishly decorative, skull-and-cross-
bones pattern. It truly has to be seen to be believed. Excellent Spanish-speaking guides are
on hand daily.
