handy location near the border. Daytime muggings and drunks on the street are not un-
common. Since Juliaca has little to offer travelers, it is advisable to stay in nearby Lampa
or move on to Puno.
Hotels, restaurants, casas de cambio (money exchangers) and internet cafes abound
along San Román, near Plaza Bolognesi . ATMs and banks are also nearby on Nuñez.
If you are in a pinch, Royal Inn Hotel ( 32-1561; www.royalinnhoteles.com ; San
Román 158; s/d/tr S100/130/150) is an excellent choice for the price. This towering hotel
boasts recently revamped modern rooms with hot showers, heating and cable TV, plus one
of Juliaca's best restaurants (mains from S18).
Getting There & Away
Air
The airport ( 32-8974) is 2km west of town. LAN ( 32-2228; San Román 125;
8am-7pm Mon-Fri, to 6pm Sat) has daily flights to/from Lima, Arequipa and Cuzco. Taca
( 32-7966; Centro Comercial Real Plaza, Jr. San Martín, cuadra 1) flies to Lima, as
does Star Peru ( 32-3816; San Román 154).
Official airport taxis go to Puno (S80) and Juliaca (S10). A cheaper option are the
colectivos (S15), bus shuttles which go direct to Puno and drop passengers at their hotels.
Bus & Taxi
The terminal terrestre (Cnr Jr. San Martín & Av Miraflores) houses long-distance bus
companies. Buses leave for Cuzco every hour from 5am to 11pm, and for Arequipa every
hour from 2:30am to 11:30pm.
Buses to the coast leave from within walking distance of Plaza Bolognesi, on and
around San Martín over the railway tracks; combis (minibuses) to Puno leave from Plaza
Bolognesi.
Julsa ( 32-6602, 33-1952) has the most frequent departures to Arequipa; Power (
32-1952) has the most frequent to Cuzco. Civa, Ormeño and San Cristobal run to
Lima.
Sur Oriente has a daily bus to Tacna at 7pm. More centrally located, San Martín (
32-7501) and other companies along Tumbes between Moquegua and Piérola go to Tacna
(S25, seven hours) via Moquegua.
