Sleeping
Though it's a tiny town, Chivay has plenty of budget guesthouses to choose from.
Hotel Pozo del Cielo $$
( 34-6547; www.pozodelcielo.com.pe ; Huascar; d/ste S88/135; ) Looking
a bit like something Gaudi might have crafted, 'Heaven's Well,' as the name translates, is
all low doorways, weirdly shaped rooms and winding paths. One half expects the seven
dwarfs to come marching out. But, surrealism aside, this place works, a functional yet
comfortable abode with an almost boutique-y feel to its individually crafted rooms and
fine ' mirador ' restaurant.
HOTEL
Hostal La Pascana $
( 53-1001; Siglo XX 106; s/d/tr incl breakfast S55/70/87; ) La Pascana is a good
old-fashioned crash-pad that will probably seem like luxury after a few days hiking in the
canyon. Simple rooms have blankets (thank heavens!), the staff is gracious and there's a
small but decent restaurant. It's several notches above the other more modest guesthouses
and lies adjacent to the plaza.
HOTEL
Casa Andina $$$
( 53-1020, 53-1022; www.casa-andina.com ; Huayna Cápac; s/d incl breakfast from
S250; ) Purposefully rustic rooms inhabit thatched-roof stone cottages in neatly sculp-
ted grounds, but the main grab-you features here are the unusual extras which include an
observatory, oxygen (should you be feeling lightheaded for a lack of it) and nightly cul-
ture shows where local musicians and artisans mingle, and a shaman tells fortunes with
coca leaves.
BOUTIQUE HOTEL
Hostal Estrella de David $
( 53-1233; Siglo XX 209; s/d/tr S20/20/40) A simple, clean hospedaje (small, family-
owned inn) with bathrooms and some rooms with cable TV. It's a few blocks from the
plaza in the direction of the bus terminal.
HOTEL
Hostal Anita $
( 53-1114; Plaza de Armas 607; s/d/tr S20/40/50) With a pretty interior courtyard, this
friendly hostel smack on the main plaza has hot showers and affable owners. Breakfast is
available upon request.
